Why can Cats Jump so High?
If you own a cat or have seen almost any cat video on the internet, then you will probably know that cats can jump really high. But why can they leap to such great heights? Well let’s find out.
First of all can different types of cats jump higher? Well, the jump height of the cat is relative to the length of the cat. This is because they can jump five times their own length. This means that if there is a smaller cat, then it will jump five times its length. But then if a bigger cat jumps five times their length, that is a higher jump height than the small cat.
So, why can cats jump so high? There is a very simple answer. According to the article “How Can Cats Jump So High”, by Pawversity , “It is because of their muscles in their legs and also the length of their legs.” Cats are made for jumping high.
Now here is a comparison between the jump height between the longest type of cat and the shortest type of cat. The longest type of cat is a Burmese, and the shortest type of cat is a Munchkin. The average length of a Burmese is 25-30 cm and before I said that cats could jump to five times their length, which means that they can jump up to 125-150 cm. The length of the Munchkin is from 18-20 cm, which means that it can jump up to 90-100 cm. That's a long way considering it's the shortest cat in the world. Now what humans could jump as high as cats? Well as you could imagine this would be very weird. Then the average human,5.5 ft, could jump up to 27.5 feet! Imagine that.
But why can cats jump higher than dogs? This is partially, as you would expect, because of their different body shapes. Now you might be thinking, well if dogs have longer legs because they are bigger than cats then shouldn’t they be able to at least jump as far and high as cats. Well… no. First of all dogs are a lot heavier than cats, and are not really built for jumping high or long. Also dogs would land a lot more awkwardly than cats since they are not very agile. They would also probably knock over nearby furniture.
There are some people who try to contain their cats because they do not want them getting to places that their owners don’t want them to get to. What can cats jump over? Cats are some of the hardest animals to contain because of how high they can jump. The highest jump by a cat was 7 feet, so that’s proof! Now here are some things that your cat could jump over. Cats can easily jump over a stair gate or baby gate, or even a garden fence sometimes.
Tips for safety. Make sure you keep fragile objects and valuables in places that your cat couldn’t get to. A good thing to invest in would be a cat tree. These are very useful because your cat/cats will love to jump up on it. I have cats and they love to sit in their cat tree.
If you are a cat owner hopefully you can benefit from these tips and this information.

DeleteI have three cats and the youngest is always getting up on high places, I just wish I've read this sooner so I would've known cats can jump 5 times their length. Also, do you own any cats and if so what is your favorite?
ReplyDeleteThe reason I decided to write this was because our cats would jump up on counters and tables, like your cats probably do. I own two cats but don't really have a favorite.
DeleteI think it is cool how cats can jump five times there length. it also was very cool when you mentioned the highest jump by a cat was seven feet!
ReplyDeleteI never knew why cats jump so high, and you explained how they can leap to great heights very well. I have a cat of my own, and always wondered how does she manage to jump so high. Why do cats like to be up high?
ReplyDeleteThe reason that cats like being up high is that they want to protect themselves, and being up high basically gives them an advantage. Being up high also gives them security when they are sleeping.
